The Iconic Herman-Miller Eames Chair Gets Bamboo-Based Upholstery

The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, designed by Charles and Ray Eames and first introduced on NBC in 1956, has become a mid-century design icon. Known for its molded plywood curves, reclined position, and luxurious leather, Charles Eames once likened the leather's appeal to “the warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Now, Herman Miller is offering the most sustainable version of this classic piece to date. This new iteration replaces traditional leather with a bamboo-based alternative, significantly reducing the carbon footprint by up to 35%. Bamboo’s rapid growth, efficient CO2 absorption, and lower water requirements make this reduction possible.

The sustainable upholstery is available in ivory, russet, and black, providing a soft, durable, leather-like feel with enhanced scratch resistance and colorfastness. Customers can pair this new material with any existing shell options, including walnut, santos palisander, ash, or oak, and choose between standard and tall sizes.

Herman Miller’s commitment to sustainability dates back to 1953 when founder D.J. De Pree pledged to be a “good corporate neighbor” and “good steward of the environment.” This ethos is reflected in the company’s lineup, such as using 100% recycled plastic for the Eames Molded Plastic Chairs and intercepted ocean-bound plastic for the Aeron Chair.

The bamboo-upholstered Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman are now available through the Herman Miller website and retail outlets, with prices ranging from $6,395 to $9,495 USD, depending on the height and shell options.
