BENEE’s latest release, “Animal,” brings a sound that will be familiar to her fans, but with a punchier style and an undoubtedly unique ‘girl moment’ lyricism.

And could I have, like, a little bit harder tune, actually?
Please?

The New Zealand native, who catapulted to fame through TikTok with her viral hit “Supalonely,” dives into introspection and celebrity with this new track. Known for her quirky alt-pop sound, BENEE reveals a more aggressive side in “Animal,” blending her signature melodic style with darker riffs and punchier drums.

Following the release of her recent single, “Sad Boiii,” BENEE’s “Animal” continues to highlight her evolution as an artist through her experience with what is essentially the overview effect. The track stems from a moment of reflection during her time on tour, with BENEE describing the experience of looking down from an airplane and feeling dwarfed by the vastness of the world. This perspective shift inspired her contrasting personal struggles and their insignificance in the grander scheme of things.

(Oh) And you can't stay mad at me (No)
I'm just an animal (Woah)
A micro-celebrity
But I mean nothing at all (Woah)
It hurts, but I'm scared to leave (Woah)
Or maybe I'm just too small (Too small)
Everything's big to me
And I mean nothing at all

"'Animal’ is a song I wrote when I felt extreme existential dread. When flying in a plane on tour, looking down onto what looks like an ant-like world really inspired the lyrics. How huge something feels when you’re in it, but zoomed out so SMALL. I love thinking about life like that,” BENEE tells Dork.

Visually, the song comes to life in a video directed by Keith Herron of Advisry, filmed in Sydney. With green screens and VHS tapes, the video is an expansion of BENEE’s imaginative world.
